So you want a puppy and you are not sure what to get or where to get it. Below are a few important questions to consider before purchasing a puppy.
- Should you go to a pet store?
- Can you get the right dog, for your family, at a rescue center?
- Do you have a friend who knows of a family with puppies?
- Do you how want a pure breed?
- Do you want a designer dog?
- What size dog should you look for?
- Do you prefer lots of exercise or occasional walks?
- Is traveling your forte or are you more the stay at home type?
- How many children are in your family, and how old are they?
There are many things to consider when deciding to add a new member to the family, particularly when you keep in mind this is a ten to fifteen year commitment.
I established puppy selection counseling as a way to help you with this decision. Together we examine your life style, family makeup, the home environment (house, apartment, city, suburb, etc.) as well as many other factors relevant to the selection process. Once I have an understanding of your requirements, together we consider the different options available. There are over 150 AKC breeds, many "designer" breeds and many wonderful mixed breeds that are looking for good homes. Once you have narrowed your focus I will help you find good kennels, breeders and rescue centers to enable you to find that perfect companion.
When you make a decision to get a dog, it is worth it to take the extra time to do it right. Remember this dog will be a member of the family for a long time.
